This is it: 2011

Last minute I decided to write a round up of 2011 at last.
2011 was a stormy year with a lot of clouds and rain, tough some people made the sun shine again.

EDIT: this post turned out quite longer than expected and is actually written just for myself.
Here follow the most important pieces for readers:

The best (of 2011):
- started a blog by myself and even met a blogger (Sara) I was reading already a long time ^^
- learned a lot about alt. culture through to all the blogs I follow and especially The Ultimate Goth Guide. Thank you!

Wishes for the coming year
 - increase my social abilities, but in small steps.
final goals this year:
* talk less about myself when meeting someone
* learn to have a decent conversation without pulling myself down or talk about school
* go alone (or with someone else than the one person I always ask to accompany me) to a public event and have a decent conversation with at least three people.
- go to the Emilie Autumn concert! I am so happy she is coming back to Belgium! : D

I wish you all a lovely 2012 and may your wishes come true this year!

With Mr. Snoes ^^

The full version is the following:

The worst:
- saw a dear friend walk away from me and I still don't know why
- fell flat on my face a few times while trying to increase my social abilities
(I really mind that I am not able to go to concerts on a regular base or even have a 'casual' social life as a teenager because I am so shy and insecure)
- I started bending recently under the pressure of growing up
(studying or quitting and start to work? Foreseeing the departure of my parental house: how on earth am I ever going to be able to pay for a house, furniture, ...?! And do I want to live alone or do I want someone to share my house with?)
- ID-crisis

The best:
- graduated at secondary education and earned my diploma as a pharmacy assistent.
- still see some people which I really like :) , while I still have no idea why these persons want to hang around with me
- started a blog by myself and even met a blogger (Sara) I was reading already a long time ^^
- went for the first time to a festival all days
- started babysitting (I consider it as a hobby), which is a lot of fun!
- gained some financial independency (through babysitting)
- after all that attention for roller derby, I couldn't resist blowing the dust of my inlineskates recently and went skating for two hours... XD I want to put my skates back on as soon as possible!
- learned how to use a sewing-machine
- started experimenting with make-up more decent (I am satisfied with my current very simple but nice result)
- socialised with the people of my study direction. I don't have 'real friends' at school, but gained a few aquintances. It is a start.
Note: most usefull thing I learned: if you greet someone at a school corridor they aren't annoyed but feel appreciated. (and if they don't respond I just shouldn't pay attention)
- learned a lot about alt. culture through to all the blogs I follow and especially The Ultimate Goth Guide. Thank you!
- got a new ear piercing! ^^ (tragus)
- went to the U.K.!
- bought some very pretty clothing pieces
I started studying at high school but it is very hard. My thougts were to pick an easy direction, related to subjects I find interesting but...
whole december I slept only a few hours a night because I drowned in my homework. Currently I have a study period and I will have my first exam eleven january but I am losing courage and motivation every day. Today I am already quite behind my tight study shedule...

Wishes for next year:
- to regain my courage and energy!
- get over the departure of my former best friend (was friends with her for more than ten years, but once her boyfriend came around...)
- get my driving licence
- during the summer holiday I want to read easy French books
- read some known books, prefarbly with a Dutch/Belgian author
- sew more (still have to work on the lolita dress. Regulary I just have to look at it and be like <3, materialist I am. ^^ )
- have some skating trips

- HAVE FUN!

Decisions:
- fullfilling my current studies as a secondary school teacher/ switch direction to primary school teacher/ start working
- probably I will lose most accuintances from secondary school, but I feel like having a meeting during coming summer holidays with all my classmates (while writing this post I even got a message from some of my classmates asking why I was online right now and not at a party or such. They know I go out rarely but it is so sweet of them! :) )

I wish you all a lovely 2012 and may your wishes come true this year!

Review: Fanplusfriends "Lolita in Ball:Detachable Sleeves Dress&Peals Chain Choker"

I lacked updates past weeks, but I still read blogs every day.

At first I didn't notice it, but apparently quite some Lolita sneaked into my reading material.
Mixed with my growing fondness for secondhand clothing (rather low budget for frivolities like brand alternative clothing), it caused a new addition to my wardrobe. Before I bought it, I searched for a review or pictures not made by the brand itself, but I couldn't find any so I decided to make a review by myself. :)

I have to say I was a bit overwhelmed when I had a first good look at the dress back home. From the pictures I expected it was much less Lolita and more Goth than it is in reality. Maybe my own mind deceived me?

DISCLAIMER: I do not consider myself as a Lolita or have plans to become one, so my acknowledge is limited. I am not Lolita advisor, if that's what you're looking for you will find plenty people to help you out at other blogs. ^^ I don't have any experience with other Lolita items, I'll review just this one dress.

Brand: Fanplusfriend
Current price: €95,68 ; $132

Description from brand:
" made by cotton, lined;
detachable sleeves;
flower embroidery laces and cotton laces, wide lycra laces trimmings at the bottom;
choker with peals chain;
pin-tuck pleated in front;
the huge bowknots and matched smaller ones are both detachable;
a waist belt in the back, easy to tie tightly to emphasize waist curve;
colors available: black, lilac, pink"

About my own dress:
the former owner wore it only twice because the size was too large.
For myself the size is also too large, but I am going to make some adjustments.
I own the black version.

Attachable parts: two long sleeves, a choker/headdress, pearls chain, one large bowknot, four smaller bowknots .

The fabric:
it's black cotton and looks like it's a very good quality. It is strong, but smells a little odd (didn't dare to wash it yet). I have a bit doubts about the colour retention.

The lace:
five (!) different kinds of lace are used.
They look good, except the kinds used at the half of the skirt and the small bowknots. These are pretty, but the edge is cut and I don't know whether they might raffle after a while.

Figure:
the size is too large for me to have a clear vision on this, but with the waist belt the large size isn't that visible.
The decolletage is too low and I am not sure this is only because my dress is too large.

Bowknots:
very pretty! Tough the safety-pins are of poor quality and can't hold the weight of the bowknots up. Some simple sewing will be sufficient to fix this. ^^

Choker/headdress:
as a choker it's a bit too big (would they adjust the size of the choker to the size of the dress?)
I am not willing to try it on as a headdress. ;)

Pearls chain:
the pearls are ridiculously large. Very plump.

Additional:
there is a small sewing mistake made at the skirt part, but I am sure no one will mention.

Overall view:
there are some remarquations, but it is a very pretty dress and I believe the quality isn't that bad!

When I am not broke anymore I will search for an underskirt. :)

A sign of life

I have been procrastinating a blog update for weeks,
time to change that!

Currently I attend high school for a month and a half. It's quite heavy because I have a permanent lack of sleep. The good news is that after three years wondering I probably found out which job I want to practise! :D The bad news: it's not what I study currently. After a lot of doubts, I study a bachelor to become a secondary school teacher biology and Dutch, but more and more I get convinced primary school teacher might be really something for me. But I am too stubborn to change studies. So if this years exams succeed, I might study two more years to become a primary school teacher. At least, that is "The Plan" for now.

At the bright side: the past weeks haven't received any name calling, gossiping, ...
I added some color streaks to my wardrobe, but usually I wander at school again like I fell in the black dye with my clothes on and no one pays attention. :)
[though I have to be careful, I heard already some people gossip about others...]

Few weeks back I attended a lovely party, which turned out to have some sharp edges.
Together with certain other happenings, I was reminded to this part of Jane Eyre.

You shouldn't try to catch the truth in jar like a butterfly

[To those who aren't familiar with Jane Eyre: you'll find the clue in the first seconds of the next part. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUt5yzwFykg&feature=related
I know this story is quite light-footed but I really like the adaptation by the BBC.]

Last week's shopping

The title says pretty much. :)
Appels (R)

Appels (R)
Actually I am not so fond of Appels because of their cheap quality, but I decided not to care that day.
And yes, you might have noticed I joined The Smurfs hype! Well no... Within two weeks I will have my first classes in "higher education" and I decided it might be a good idea to dress a bit more "colorful" then I did in the past years.
Tamaris (R)

Tamaris (R)

Tamaris (R)
Dressing down or not, I picked some adorable boots. These cuties led to much discussion at home, whether I could keep them or not. Though I think they have found a definitive new home at my feet. :)
One thing keeps me doubting: I am 1.73-1.76m tall and the heels are 8 cm.
Do you think I will look way too tall?

Tutankhamun exhibition

Last week I visited the exhibition of Tutankhamun in Brussels. It was impressive, tough I was a bit disappointed when turned out that from the first to the last object everything was a replica.

Treasure room

This coffin contained a few other similar coffins.
Check its height! Reference: I am like 1.73 m tall.

Stories to read before bedtime: Chris Priestley

Who here likes scary tales? *counts hands*

Today you are at the right address, this post is about Chris Priestley.
Never heard from? Shame on you...

Born on 25 August 1958, this British author decided already at a young age he wanted to become a writer.
His scary tales are actually meant for children from ten years old, but believe me if I say they are very enjoyable too if you are older! I have only read the Dutch versions of following books, but I can say the use of words isn't too childish and the letter size isn't annoyingly big.

I especially recommend:
Tales of terror from the black ship (De verschrikkelijke verhalen van het zwarte schip)
Uncle Montagues tales of terror (De verschrikkelijke verhalen van oom M.)
Tales of terror from the tunnels mouth (De verschrikkelijke verhalen van de vrouw in het wit)

My favourite: Uncle Montagues tales of terror.

Edgar is an only child with rather unpleasant parents. This is why he likes to visit his "great-uncle" Montague, which lives next to his house. (actually Edgar shortens how many times it has to be "great") Montague is an eccentric man who lives with his, never seen, butler Franz at a decreasing villa. They meet always at the same room of Montague's house, which is filled with curiosities Montague collected during his travels. Each of this objects seems to be connected to an obscure tale. Of course those tales aren't suited for little children, but couldn't a brave boy like Edgar stand more than an average kid?

All of these frame stories are wonderfully spooky illustrated by David Roberts.

Check out this website for more: http://www.talesofterror.co.uk/

Any other sinners here which read children's books too?

After all: dear U.K. II...

My holiday at the UK:
I was very surprised, in the good way, about the people in London!
Everyone was so unbelievable kind and polite!
In Belgium I am often considered being (sometimes to much) polite, but I felt rude compared to the people over there. Also I saw a few lovely gothcouples at London, but not as much as I had expected.

We visited in London: the Palace of Westminster, the Towerbridge, Harrods, the London zoo and the British museum.
Especially the British museum is worth a visit, it is free and HUGE...!
They have a pretty Egyptian collection and, as turned out when we arrived, the two headed snake. The snake seems not to have an "official name", but it's a known piece of Aztec art of which I am fond since I was about ten years old. I am so happy I have seen it!

At the Towerbridge, with typical English weather. ;)
The second week we stayed at a small village and visited the coast, some churches with lovely graveyards (some headstones were almost 200 years old!), some Victorian houses (I adored this part of our holiday ^^) and many, many, many ... sheep! XD

We took a break during our travel back to Belgium to visit Stonehenge, and then our holiday was over...
This was our best holiday in years and I hope to return within a while, because there is so much left to see and I definitely want to pay a visit to those famous Camden shops.

After my holiday I had back my old spirit which had left me the past weeks. :)

So, it has been a while

My title says pretty much. Past weeks were busy and I kept on reading blogs, but writing...
I was a playground moni, went to Marktrock to see Zornik (Marktrock is a free festival in Leuven, Belgium), have been sewing, tidying up and go on.
Because I already wrote a post about my trip to the UK and just waited for the pictures I will post it anyway.
Probably I will resume blogging for now.

Btw someone taught me how to play chess yesterday. I suck, harshly, but it is something which is on the loooong list of "Things I want to learn someday". :p

Dear U.K.:

Actually I intended to blog about "The exorcism of Emily Rose". Because I saw this movie mentioned a few times I thought I was one of the (many) black holes in my knowledge of culture. It was a disappointment to spent not too much attention at furthermore...

Something else:
tomorrow I am leaving to spent two weeks holiday in the U.K.

Yay!
This means after five years of English education, I will finally hear it spoken by natives.
I have to confess I am not fully prepared for our trip...
So I will read a guide while travelling.

London:
Camden won't be on our visiting list, unfortunately.
Tussauds or the London Eye either, but I don't really care about it.
I really want to go to the British Museum and hope to convince my family. ^^
Bookstores! Ow yeah! I am a reading addict on a strict diet, but I hope to buy at least some English books since I own not a single one.
The London Dungeon seemed possibly interesting, but for a family with four "adult" members is the price too high.
And like every holiday we couldn't miss the traditional zoo trip, well I could actually.
Last time I visited the U.K. I was only six years old, but I remember the visit to a "haunted" castle as one of the most fun parts. I hope we might visit it again. ^^

We will spent the second week at the countryside.
Which doesn't sounds that interesting...
but I will make the best of it and have lots of reading material with me. (a)
It contains a wonderful bookseries about which I will tell you after my return.

All that is left to me is to fill my mp3 with some good music and to wish you goodbye.
See you within two weeks! ^^

Nineteenness

I got a
baby's brain and an old man's heart

Took eighteen years to get this far
Don't always know what I'm talkin' about
Feels like I'm livin in the middle of doubt

Cause I'm
Eighteen
I get confused every day

Because we adore freaks! ^^
And I have only a few remaining eighteen-year-old hours to go.

Ghost bubbles

Today I will post about another artist: Toon Hertz.

I like to support people for all forms of art, but especially for those of my own little country. He is Belgian and lives in Liège. Toon was born in 1967, but for my feeling he could be like twenty years old. His works emanate youth so pervasive. He works with photo manipulation and digital painting.

Typical for his artwork are:
a dark blue/grayish background (there are a few exceptions)
ghostly pale faces
rather large heads in comparison with the bodies
bats
dead trees and branches
crows
cages

They often express eternity, loneliness and emptiness. Though his personages display also emotions other than sadness.

Because this author asks explicitly not to publish his artwork at (among others) blogs, I will post links to his Deviantart account. :)

Gathered by mices

Because last week's have been so busy, I barely found the time to blog.

I had my last secondary education exams and presented my GIP.
Afterwards I went to Graspop.
I slept only few hours every night (and couldn't catch up the sleep I missed during the exams), got wet two days, survived on cookies and bad tasting noodles, even tanned Sunday because I couldn't find my suncream at home, ... but funny enough everyone told me after my return I looked so much healthier than before. XD
Then I graduated as a pharmacy assistant and attended the prom of my school where I saw almost all my classmates getting drunk (very comic since I don't drink alcohol by myself).

This is the third year I will be a monitor for two weeks at the local playground and I had my first gathering with the two other girls of my group. This year I will take care for one week about four to five year olds and another week for nine to ten year old's. Actually I didn't intend to return to the playground, but to find a decent holiday-task this year. It's quite hard at the time itself and the preparations ask much time, but afterwards I always look back at those weeks with joy. I hope badly I can recruit some other people to go too because for now it seems like the second week I will have to try to keep more than twenty kids under control by my own!

I live near (one of) Belgium's largest mainstream festivals: Rock Werchter. Tickets are way too expensive and they drive up prices every year. But... as locals me and my sister know where we can enjoy acts at a distance for free. : p So when there's a performance we like to see, we take our bicycle and pay a visit to Werchter city. I accompanied my sister to Linkin Park as a goodbye for ten days.
The next day I brought my sister to Brussels for the bus to the amusements park trip in Spain.

Afterwards I had the great idea not to return straight home, but to stop first at Leuven for some sales. ^^
Because my sister kidnapped the crappy camera to Spain, pictures come within a week.
I found some great stuff! (but no clothing actually)
Yesterday I saw Iron Maiden. ^^ (not that I am a Maiden know it all, but when such a known band comes so near your house it would be a shame not to check it out) Too bad the sound wasn't loud enough sometimes, but further it was nice.

Tomorrow I will have my practical driving licence exam so currently I am preparing for that.
Afterwards I should do little preparations for our family holiday in the United Kingdom. (things we really should visit in London?), more playground preparations, some city trips and make my final decision which school courses I will follow the next years.

Satisfaction

Finally some blogging time! As told before I went to Graspop past Friday and weekend. Before I left I had my doubts because I am not really the kind of person to put in a crowd of a few ten thousand humans. Even tough I went last year a day, I knew barely anyone... I pushed myself to do it because I really, really, REALLY have to get out of my house more often and became even more introverted than ever the past four years. Also, some of the bands which performed were on my wish-list since the beginning I became aware of something called "alternative music" and I didn't want to let this opportunity pass because I fear strangers.

Which acts have I seen?
(I saw more acts, then I will describe here, but I only mention the most important ones for me. Also, I have difficulties with uploading pictures, I will probably add more photographs later.)
For me Graspop began with Arkona. This is a Russian folk metal band and they were quite good. ^^
Korn couldn't convince me, but I have to admit I barely knew their music.
The first "WOW-effect" came with Epica! They are one of the most important reasons why I hád to attend this years edition. I was very impressed by their singer Simone Simons.

the lead vocalist of Epica: Simone
I heard Volbeat only at the background, but enjoyed their performance.
The day finished with the Scorpions, which were okay.

The next day, Saturday the twenty-fifth of July, I celebrated my five years "alternative culture". ^^
(I think it's quite funny I still remember that, actually I heard only one person ever mention something as a date) I didn't do anything special, but it's just a fun-fact.
The first performance was Diablo Boulevard, the band of Alex Agnew, which is a very known comedian in Belgium. It drizzled tough the attendance was large. The act was nice but not too exiting.
Next act was the Italian Lacuna Coil. I adored their performance!

Lacuna Coil

Another peak was the concert by Arch Enemy. For my feeling their singer made a tiger-like appearance. They really "sucked" me into their performance.

FOTO

A rather extreme appearance was made by Cradle of Filth. I approved their act very much.
The images which played at the background, the clothing of the band members and the mutated microphones accomplished their performance.

FOTO

I missed Pain...!!! :( It's my own fault because I lost track of the time schedule, but I regret it a lot.
Ozzy Osbourne was scheduled as headliner that evening, but cancelled.
Instead we got more Judas Priest... -.-

I almost couldn't realise it when it was already Sunday!
We started with Steak Number Eight which was okay.
Next was Amorphis. I had expected more, but they satisfied. It surprised me I some band members passed later the day at the Festival Fair. : p
Avenged Sevenfold followed, but couldn't make me that enthusiast.
One of the best performances was made by a band never listened before: Legion of the Damned.
The performance was so catching!
My parents insisted on picking me up Sunday evening, so I left at nine o'clock in the evening.
The last act I saw at was Opeth. They weren't bad, but some other bands I saw could have blown them straight away.

That was the end of Graspop 2011 for me. I was insecure about going, but I am glad I did. Next year I should find more people to go with because this year I mainly accompanied two people and I didn't feel comfortable for them. Tough the only one making an issue about this seems to be me.

Thank you guys!

(I don't know if they will ever read this, but I intend to publish the link to my blog somewhere in the future)

Sometimes I found it hard to be surrounded by humans all the time. Tough I have met many people, even just briefly, and learned much about (let us call it:) a different culture than mine. XD

I believe it is true what an acquaintance said to me when I told him I felt awkward for knowing so little others: every year you go you will recognise more people of last year...! ^^

Grasfever

Within few minutes I'm leaving for Graspop! (Belgium's biggest metal festival)
Yay!
I was finally allowed to go all three days. ^^ So over a few hours, I'll be standing in front of Arkona, Epica and many more. I've no idea how things will be going, since I know only very few people of the group with which I will sit together.

Nervousness...! ^^

(when I get back I'll write a decent blog and don't mind my spelling mistakes, but I don't have enough time to check everything)

Curiosity killed the Cat

Today my post is about one of my favourite drawers. Her artist's name is Kmye Chan (derived from Camille). You might not expect it with this nickname, but she's French and lives in Paris. She's still a student, but in her free time she is a freelance illustrator. I don't have the impression Kmye Chan is that known in Belgium but her work is regularly exhibited internationally.

(This picture is from my archive so I don't remember the source anymore.
It would represent Kmye Chan herself.)

15 Sweet monster facts

I follow blogs for a few months right now. One of the returning subjects I always found interesting was the “15 facts” (a part of a photo challenge in which I won’t participate).

(crappy camera)

1. I’m a shyness. I used to think I’d grow out it, but it’s clear I didn’t.

2. I’m the most rational, irrational person you might ever come across with.

3. I love to experiment,^^
on the conditions I won’t get babies of it or won’t be permanently physically or psychologically damaged.

4. I adore reading, but I’ve sadly enough so little time for it.

5. My first book I picked when I was eight years old. It’s called “A vampire awakes” by R.L. Stine. That moment was the beginning of The Madness. I read through my whole childhood, mostly scary tales.

6. For an unknown reason (some) people tend to believe I’m a very calm person.

7. Recently I started sewing. I don’t create anything (yet?), but currently I restore a skirt. It’s awesome, I wanted one like this for years! Because its second-hand I didn’t pay that much. I’ve already planned other little sewing projects for when it’s finished. Somewhere in the future I’ll blog about my sewing machine adventures.

8. I’m known for living in my own little world. Reality is quite scary if you’re only a little girl.

9. Scary or not, I’m curious about what’s going on in the outer world. I read everything I can lay my hands on, the online paper and blogs being my most current victims.

10. I wonder about what keeps people busy, though I’m easily too intimidated to ask. I might not tell that much by myself, but I listen carefully to others.

11. About a year ago I realised I almost finished all the language classes I’ll probably have in my life. This felt quite oppressive and from then on I focused even more than before on my English. I look forward to my holiday in the U.K.! (and secretly I hope I can ever take Spanish classes in the far future)

12. If I don’t like something I won’t pretend I do, whether it’s a new sweater or someones behaviour. I just likely won’t tell until my opinion is asked.

13. A new environment and unknown people make me extremely nervous.

14. I’m very fond of music. Sadly I can’t play anything by myself because I think lessons would absorb to much time I need for other things and I don’t own the money to pay everything by myself (I’m to proud to ask the parents, which wouldn’t appreciate a noisy hobby by the way). Generally I prefer metal and other alternative music, but sometimes I like to switch for a few weeks to pop and other styles.

15. I named my blog “I love my monsters” after the song by The Voronas.
Why monsters? Because they are and always have been everywhere in my life, some being sweeter than others.

The experimenting kind

Hi, I’m Gwen. I started this blog in the first place to practice my English. Also time slipped through my hands the past years so I thought it would be nice to save at least some memories. I’ll turn nineteen soon, how insane is that...?! The blog will be accessible for everyone, but keep in mind that (for now?) it’s actually not written for an audience. I never blogged before so I don’t know yet how things will evolve.

Greetings,
Gwen

PS: feel free to comment my writing errors. ^^
